In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s bestselling Red Queen series, allegiances are tested on every side. And when the Lightning Girl's spark is gone, who will light the way for the rebellion?
Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother's web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.
As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare's heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.
When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.
My Review:
Rating: 4/5 stars
I was very happy to see this book had a map and I loved using it when a character mentioned where they were to see where it was on the map. After the ending of the last book I knew we would be getting a good dose of Maven who I absolutely love. I actually prefer him to Cal, anyone else? His character arc is so great. He is the villain but also isn't one dimensional which is brilliant. Most of the book was about Mare's imprisonment which I thought may drag on a bit but I don't think it did, in my opinion.
It was good to get two new POV's as well Mare's. Cameron was a good perspective because she was almost neutral - not wanting to fight, not being 100% okay with what the Scarlet Guard were doing, not Mare or Cal's biggest fans. It was refreshing. Then we get a few chapters from Evangeline's perspective and that was so fun! Getting to know her better and realising she does feel things other than hatred. I really wanted to see her POV during the battle at the end because that would have been epic but no such luck. Sadly there are fade to black sex scenes which are not my favourite but I still enjoyed this book and look forward to the last book in the series!
