Book Review: The Midnight Man by Caroline Mitchell

Writer's picture: Amy LittlefordAmy Littleford

If you open your door to the Midnight Man, hide with a candle wherever you can. Try not to scream as he draws near, because one of you won't be leaving here...

On Halloween night in Slayton, five girls go to Blackhall Manor to play the Midnight Game. They write their names on a piece of paper and prick their fingers to soak it in blood. At exactly midnight they knock on the door twenty-two times - they have invited the Midnight Man in.

It was supposed to be a game, but only four girls come home.

Detective Sarah Noble has just returned to the force, and no one knows more about Blackhall Manor than her. It's a case that will take Sarah back to everything she's been running from, and shake her to the core.

Will she be ready to meet the Midnight Man?

My Review:

Firstly, I'd like to thank Tandem Collective UK and Bonnier Books for the free audiobook of The Midnight Man for an honest review! I really loved joining in with all the other readers and being able to talk about the book together.

I absolutely devoured this book. I can't believe I listened to a 9 hour audio in two days and one of those days I was at work! I loved the narrators for this audio. They are both great voice actors and really captured the different POVs so well. It definitely starts off really creepy and I couldn't listen to it after it got dark but once I really got into it I just needed to know what happened. It also kept me company while I was ill in bed.

The Midnight Man is picking off children one by one after they play the midnight game but all he really wants is Sarah to re-enact her past and set the record straight. Sarah is a detective who we are trying to figure out who the Midnight Man is with. I really thought I knew who it was going to be. I was like yep it's definitely him. But of course I was wrong. For me this book was brilliant until the ending. The person who it actually was wasn't a twist that had me excited. Then it all wrapped up pretty quickly from the point we found out who it was which felt rushed for me. But then we also had an extra 30 minutes about Sarah solving the case from her past.

Even though the ending wasn't my favourite, I did really enjoy this book. All the different POVs, and the small town where everyone knows each other. I'm excited to see where this series goes next!
